A Call for Community Cooperation
Tutbury’s peacocks are well-known and admired by many — but their growing numbers are creating serious problems for some of our residents. The Parish Council is asking everyone in the village to help address the issue by stopping the feeding of peacocks.
Why is feeding them a problem?
When peacocks are regularly fed:
-
They gather and breed in the same locations, creating growing flocks
-
They roost near homes, leading to loud, early-morning calls — often beginning as early as 4:00–5:00am
-
They leave unsanitary droppings on driveways, rooftops, patios, and vehicles
-
Residents have reported invasions of privacy, with visitors or neighbours taking photos and videos of birds congregating near private property
-
They become more confident and harder to deter, especially around homes where food is provided
Legal responsibility
Under the Environmental Protection Act 1990, residents who feed the birds may be considered responsible for them — and could face enforcement action if the birds cause noise or environmental nuisance to neighbours. This includes being asked to take steps to resolve the problem.
We understand that many people enjoy the birds — but for others, particularly those living in areas where they gather in large numbers, the situation has become distressing.
What you can do
-
Please do not feed the peacocks — anywhere in the village.
-
Discourage others from feeding them, especially visitors who may not understand the impact.

Working together
The Parish Council is exploring responsible and humane solutions, including working with local wildlife organisations. Your cooperation is essential in keeping this a manageable situation for everyone.
Thank you for your understanding and support.
